Overview

About the Brahmatal Trek - Uttarakhand's Best Winter Trek for 2026

Most people discover the Brahmatal Trek while searching for a winter trek they can actually do - one that involves real snow and real mountains without requiring technical climbing skills or a body that has spent years at altitude. The Brahmatal delivers on exactly that brief. It is a 6-day loop from Lohajung in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, that takes you through snow-laden oak and rhododendron forest, past two frozen alpine lakes, and up to a summit viewpoint with a clear, unobstructed line of sight to Trishul (7,120m), Nanda Ghunti (6,309m), and Chaukhamba. On a good day, you can also pick out Mt. Neelkanth and the Kedarnath range from the top.

The centrepiece of the trek is Brahmatal Lake itself, sitting at 3,450m (11,318 ft) and freezing completely during December through February. The lake holds religious significance for locals - small offerings are placed at its edge year-round - and in winter the frozen surface acts as a mirror for the surrounding peaks. The image of Trishul reflected on ice at sunrise is the photograph that has put this trek on every serious trekker's shortlist. But it is not just the lake. Bekaltal Lake, one day below Brahmatal, freezes similarly and is often quieter and more atmospheric because fewer people stop long enough to notice it.

What makes the Brahmatal Trek stand apart from other winter options is its trail quality. The path from Lohajung is well-defined, the altitude gain is gradual, and the maximum elevation of 12,250 ft is achievable for anyone with reasonable fitness and a willingness to walk in cold weather. There are no technical sections - no fixed ropes, no glacier crossings, no crampon-mandatory terrain. The challenge is the cold itself, the weight of a loaded pack over snow, and four consecutive days above 10,000 feet. Trekkers who handle that well come back from the Brahmatal saying it was better than they expected. Trekkers who underestimate the cold come back saying they wish they had packed differently.

Itinerary of Brahmatal Trek, Uttarakhand

The drive from Rishikesh to Lohajung takes 9-11 hours via Karnprayag and Tharali. It is a long day in the vehicle - the road winds through the Pindar river valley and the scenery is worth staying awake for, but the journey is genuinely tiring. TripToOcean departs Rishikesh early (typically 5:30–6:00 AM) from a fixed pickup point. Dehradun pickups are available with prior arrangement.

Lohajung is a small village at 1,680m in Chamoli district - the standard base for the Brahmatal Trek and a handful of other routes in the region. The village has guesthouses, a couple of small eateries, and a relaxed pace that is a good antidote to a long road day. Check into the guesthouse, get a hot meal, review tomorrow's start time with your guide, and sleep early.

If you are travelling from Delhi, an overnight bus to Rishikesh (approx. 6 hrs) is the most efficient way to arrive in time for the morning departure - contact TripToOcean for the current pickup schedule.

Overnight: Guesthouse in Lohajung | Meals: Dinner

The first day of actual trekking begins at Lohajung and climbs steadily through mixed forest into the trail proper. The initial section passes through oak trees that have been standing here for decades - in winter their branches carry a weight of snow that bends them down toward the path, and walking through feels like moving through a white tunnel. The gradient is consistent and manageable; this is not a day that tests you, but it tells you a lot about your pace and how the altitude is sitting with you.

By mid-afternoon you arrive at Bekaltal - a small frozen lake tucked into a forest clearing at nearly 9,630 feet. Most trekking groups move past Bekaltal too quickly. It deserves more time. The lake sits completely still and ice-covered through January, with oak branches leaning over the surface and the first glimpse of higher snow slopes visible above the treeline. Camp is set up at the lakeside.

Evenings at Bekaltal are cold - temperatures typically drop to -5°C to -10°C by nightfall in January. Your guide will brief you on tent protocols and layering for the night.

Overnight: Tent camp at Bekaltal | Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner | Trek: ~6 km, 4-5 hrs

The climb from Bekaltal to Brahmatal is the steepest section of the trek. The trail moves out of the forest and into open snowfields above the treeline - and as it does, the sky opens up and the mountains come into view properly for the first time. Trishul's silhouette appears above the ridge to the northwest. The snow underfoot deepens as you climb, and by the time you are within an hour of Brahmatal, you may be walking through knee-deep powder in a good snowfall year.

The pace on this day matters. Walk steadily rather than fast - the altitude gain from Bekaltal to Brahmatal camp is nearly 500 metres in 6 km, which is enough to feel on trekkers who have not been above 10,000 feet before. Your guide sets the pace; follow it rather than racing ahead.

Arriving at Brahmatal, the lake is immediately visible - a wide frozen bowl ringed by snow slopes. The campsite is set up beside it. In the evening, as the light drops, the peaks surrounding the lake catch the last sun while the valley below is already in shadow. It is one of those views that is hard to describe accurately to someone who has not been there.

Overnight: Tent camp at Brahmatal Lake | Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner | Trek: ~6 km, 5-6 hrs

Summit day. Start before sunrise - typically 5:00–5:30 AM with headlamps. The push from camp to Brahmatal Top (12,250 ft) takes 1.5-2 hours on a clear winter morning and is completely worth every degree of cold. The summit is a broad snow ridge rather than a sharp peak, and the panorama from it is the reason this trek has the reputation it does.

To the north and northwest: Trishul (7,120m) and Nanda Ghunti (6,309m), close enough that you can make out their ridgelines clearly. To the northeast: Chaukhamba (7,138m), the sacred peak that lords over Badrinath. On an exceptional day, Neelkanth and the Kedarnath range are also visible. The frozen Brahmatal Lake sits directly below the ridge, and in early morning light the peaks reflect in it - fractured through the ice, but unmistakably there.

Spend time at the top. Take photographs. Then begin the descent to Daldum - a beautiful open meadow below the treeline, warmer and more sheltered than Brahmatal camp, where the second night of camping feels comparatively luxurious after the night at the lake.

Overnight: Tent camp at Daldum | Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner | Trek: ~8 km, 6-7 hrs

The final day of walking is a straightforward descent from Daldum through forest back to Lohajung. The trail passes through several small Garhwali hamlets - stone houses, terraced fields dusted with snow, the smell of wood smoke - and the contrast with the open snowfields of the previous two days is pleasing. By mid-morning you are walking through a landscape that feels inhabited again.

Arrive in Lohajung by early afternoon. Hot showers (if available at the guesthouse), a proper meal, and a rest before tomorrow's long drive. Your guide and TripToOcean crew will wrap up the trek, collect feedback, and hand out completion certificates. The evening is yours to spend in Lohajung or relax at the guesthouse.

Overnight: Guesthouse in Lohajung | Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner | Trek: ~6 km, 3-4 hrs

Breakfast at the guesthouse and then the long drive back. Departure is early - typically 5:00-6:00 AM - to reach Rishikesh or Dehradun by late afternoon, which allows trekkers to catch evening trains or flights onward to Delhi and beyond.

The return drive follows the same Pindar valley road, which is as scenic going south as it was going north. If you need to extend your stay in Rishikesh or Dehradun before onward travel, TripToOcean can recommend guesthouses at both drop points - ask at booking.

Safety on the Brahmatal Winter Trek

Why Brahmatal is Considered Safe for Beginners

  • Maximum altitude of 12,250 ft is well within the range manageable for healthy first-timers with basic preparation.

  • No technical sections - no glacier crossings, no fixed-rope climbs, no crampon-mandatory terrain under normal conditions.

  • The trail is well-defined even under heavy snowfall. Your guide knows every section in winter conditions.

  • Gradual altitude gain across three days gives the body time to acclimatise without stress.

Cold and Hypothermia: The primary risk on the Brahmatal Trek is not altitude - it is cold. Temperatures at Brahmatal camp can drop to -10°C to -15°C overnight in January, with wind chill pushing the felt temperature lower. A sleeping bag rated to -10°C or colder is non-negotiable. Wet clothing at these temperatures loses insulation rapidly - change out of sweaty base layers before the temperature drops in the evening. Never enter your sleeping bag in damp clothing.

AMS Awareness: Altitude sickness at 12,000 feet is less common than at higher Himalayan altitudes but not impossible, particularly in trekkers who ascend quickly and are not well hydrated. Symptoms — persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite — should be reported to the guide immediately. Descent is the only reliable treatment. Do not take painkillers and continue upward hoping it will pass.

Snowfall and Trail Conditions: January and February can bring heavy snowfall in the Lohajung area. TripToOcean monitors trail conditions from Lohajung-based contacts before each batch departs. If snow is too deep for safe camping, the guide adjusts the itinerary - for example, camping at a lower elevation than Brahmatal and day-summiting the top instead. These decisions are made on-site by the guide based on actual conditions, not on the published itinerary.

Physical Preparation: A minimum of 6 weeks of preparation is recommended. Walk or run 45 minutes 4-5 times per week. Stair climbing with a light pack (5 kg) for 20-30 minutes daily is the single most useful preparation for this trek. You do not need to be exceptionally fit - but you do need to be capable of sustained walking for 4-6 hours on consecutive days without your knees or cardiovascular system shutting down.

Brahmatal Trek Packing List - What to Carry in Winter 2026

Important Notes Before Booking

Read Before You Confirm

  • A personal sleeping bag rated to -10°C or colder is mandatory - it is not provided and there is no substitute. Renting one in Rishikesh or Lohajung is perfectly acceptable; just confirm the temperature rating with the rental shop.

  • Travel insurance covering emergency evacuation is required. Helicopter rescue from the Brahmatal area costs ₹1-2.5 lakh without coverage. Your policy must cover trekking above 3,500m.

  • The road to Lohajung can be blocked by snowfall in January-February. TripToOcean monitors conditions and will communicate any delays before the Day 1 departure. Pack flexibility into your return travel from Rishikesh - do not book a same-day onwards train if you can avoid it.

  • There is no mobile network on the trail between Bekaltal and Daldum. You will be offline for approximately 3 days. Inform family and contacts of your itinerary before leaving Rishikesh.

  • The trek is a loop - you start and end in Lohajung. Unlike point-to-point treks like Rupin Pass, there is no second vehicle needed at the endpoint.

  • Wildlife: Himalayan black bear and musk deer inhabit the forests around Bekaltal. They are generally shy and winter sightings are rare, but do not leave food unattended at camp. Your guide will advise on camp protocols.

FAQs

Yes - the Brahmatal is one of the most recommended first winter treks in India. The maximum altitude of 12,250 ft is achievable for healthy adults with no prior high-altitude experience. There are no technical sections, no glacier crossings, no crampon-mandatory terrain under normal conditions, and the trail is guided throughout. The challenge is the cold - not the terrain. If you are comfortable with the cold and have done any basic trekking before (even summer forest walks), the Brahmatal is a realistic first snow trek. Kedarkantha is a close comparison in terms of difficulty.

Brahmatal Lake typically freezes completely by mid-December and stays frozen through February. January is the peak month - the ice is thickest, the snow cover on the surrounding trail is deepest, and the summit views are clearest in the dry winter air. December (especially after the 15th) and February both offer the frozen lake experience, though snowfall in February is more variable. If you want the full winter experience - deep snow, frozen lake, unobstructed peak views - January is the month to book.

Budget ₹12,000-₹15,000 per person all-in from Delhi for the shared group option. Breakdown: ₹7,499 TripToOcean package + ₹375 GST (5%) + ₹800-₹1,200 Delhi-Haridwar/Rishikesh (train) + ₹1,000-₹2,000 personal spending and gear rental. The Brahmatal is one of the most affordable genuine winter snow trek experiences available in India - comparable treks with similar views cost ₹15,000-₹20,000 at other operators for the land package alone.

Both are excellent first winter treks at similar altitudes and difficulty levels. Kedarkantha (12,500 ft) has a sharper summit and is more popular - which means better infrastructure at camp but more crowded trails. Brahmatal (12,250 ft) is slightly less crowded, has two frozen lakes instead of one summit camp lake, and the mountain views from Brahmatal Top (Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba) are wider and more dramatic than the Kedarkantha panorama. Choose Brahmatal if the lake + view combination matters more to you; choose Kedarkantha if the summit climb experience is the priority.

Not mandatory, but useful. In December, the trail above Bekaltal can be icy rather than snowy - compact ice underfoot is harder to walk on than deep powder and microspikes add useful grip. In January when snow is deep, crampons are less necessary than in icy conditions. If you have microspikes, bring them. If you do not, good-quality waterproof trekking boots with a grippy Vibram-type sole are sufficient for most conditions on this route. TripToOcean can advise on current trail conditions closer to your departure date.

The oak and rhododendron forests between Lohajung and Bekaltal are home to the Himalayan Monal (Danphe) -Uttarakhand's state bird and one of India's most striking pheasants, with iridescent plumage visible even against snow. Musk deer tracks are commonly seen on the trail above Bekaltal. Himalayan black bear inhabit the forest zone but winter sightings are rare as they tend toward semi-hibernation in the coldest months. Red fox have been spotted near Daldum meadow on winter mornings. Birdwatchers will also find koklass pheasant, bar-tailed treecreeper, and snow pigeon in the higher sections.

Children aged 10 and above who are active and have done some basic hiking can manage the Brahmatal Trek with proper preparation and gear. The 6-day duration and moderate daily distances (6-8 km) are within range for a fit child. The primary concern with children on this trek is cold management - children lose body heat faster than adults, and ensuring they are properly layered and in a warm-enough sleeping bag is essential. TripToOcean requires a parent or guardian to accompany all trekkers under 16 and asks for a basic fitness assessment before confirming children's bookings for the winter season.

Three things that no other comparable-difficulty winter trek in Uttarakhand offers together: two frozen alpine lakes (Bekaltal and Brahmatal) on the same route; a 360° summit panorama at 12,250 ft that includes Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, and on clear days the Kedarnath range; and the complete transformation of the oak-rhododendron forest under snow - walking through it is one of those quietly extraordinary experiences that stays with people long after the summit photographs fade from memory. Most winter treks in this range give you one of these three. Brahmatal gives you all of them.
